In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, I have witnessed countless proclamations heralding revolutionary shifts in how we operate. From the advent of the internet to the current AI frenzy, the refrain persists: "The way we work will change forever." But amid the clamor, one truth remains steadfast: the enduring need for businesses to define their Mission, Vision, and Strategy.

Michael Porter, a renowned business scholar, faced skepticism when he dared to challenge the prevailing wisdom surrounding the internet's impact on business. In his seminal work "Strategy and the Internet" (HBR 2001), Porter rebuked the notion that the internet alone constitutes a strategy. His argument resonates today amidst the fervor surrounding AI: technology, in and of itself, is not a strategy.

Amidst the AI gold rush, the pivotal question emerges: will this technological marvel truly generate new revenue streams rooted in tangible growth? Or will it merely inflate valuations with nebulous metrics like user counts and website visits? While such metrics have their place, they pale in comparison to the concrete exchange of cash and the genuine value delivered to users.

Artificial Intelligence has swiftly become the poster child for innovation, promising new avenues for search, content creation, and quick earnings. But amidst the excitement, we must pause to ask: does this translate to genuine value creation and sustainable business models?

Returning to the crux of the matter, technology devoid of purpose is futile. AI, epitomized by tools like ChatGPT, can indeed enhance efficiency and productivity when wielded judiciously. Yet, the true litmus test lies in whether these gains translate into tangible value. Deploying AI to streamline routine tasks like email responses falls short of genuine value creation. True value emerges when organizations harness AI to propel transformative change—a turbo boost if you will. Liberated from the drudgery of mundane tasks, employees can refocus on the organization's overarching Mission and Vision. This shift enables a proactive approach to market dynamics, competitive advantages, and value creation.

Porter's assertion holds true: technology alone is not a strategy. The onus falls on organizational leaders to discern where AI can truly augment value and catalyze growth. Embracing AI not as an end, but to unlock untapped potential, holds the key to sustainable success in our ever-evolving digital landscape.
